PNA (Peptide Nucleic Acid) is a synthetic oligonucleotide in which the neutral backbone is comprised of N-(2-aminoethyl) glycine units linked by amide bonds, and the bases are attached to the backbone via methylene carbonyl linkages. It conforms generally to the formula:
